Hans Bodo Lüngen received his Dipl.-Ing. degree in metallurgy and subsequently a Dr.-Ing. degree in the field of iron ore sintering at the Technical University Aachen, Germany.
On 1 March 1985 he started as scientific engineer in the metallurgy department of the Steel Institute VDEh, Düsseldorf, Germany and was appointed manager of the iron making department two years later.
In February 2001 Hans Bodo Lüngen was appointed senior manager of the metallurgy department, in March 2003 senior manager team production including metallurgy, metal forming and plant technology department and in April 2008 director technology including the departments metallurgy, metal forming, plant technology, steel materials and their application, Standardisation and steel academy.
From November 2019 until his retirement end of December 2021 he took over the positions of Executive Member of the Managing Board of Steel Institute VDEh and chairman of the board of administration of the VDEh Betriebsforschungsinstitut GmbH (BFI), a 100 % daughter of VDEh.
Hans Bodo Lüngen was member and for some periods responsible organizer of the European Blast Furnace Committee since 1985 as well as of the European Coke Committee since 1991.
He was also engaged in the field of European research as member of the Executive Committee B1 “Iron Ore Reduction” of the European Commission for Coal and Steel (ECSC) since 1985 and since 2006 chairman of the successor Executive Committee TGS1 of the EU Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS).
He was also responsible for many European and International Conferences/Congresses in the field of iron and steelmaking being organized and held in Germany between 1986 and 2022.
In 2015 he and his co-authors received the best paper award by the AIST Environmental Technology Committee for the paper entitled “Steel´s Contribution for a Low-Carbon Europe”. In May 2021 the Thomas L. Joseph Award of the Ironmaking Technology Committee of the American Iron and Steel Technology (AIST) was presented to Hans Bodo Lüngen. This award honours experts and professionals who have gained merits in ironmaking technologies.
Dr. Hans Bodo Lüngen has currently 330 publications in the field of iron and steelmaking, environmental protection and CO2 mitigation technologies in the steel industry.
